Grant was working on a project that required him to look at Maggie's video birth announcement again and he sent it to me to look at. I hadn't watched it since she was a few months old so it was fun to see it again. It's so sweet and I thought I'd share it again since some of you never saw it in the first place. As much fun as she is now it kind of makes me miss the time when she was so little. Wait. I just remembered how little she slept back then. All right, I'm over the nostalgia :) Here's the video anyway.

Hey little cousin
Maggie LOVES her cousin, Jack. She hasn't bit or hit him lately, either, which is great for everyone. Her favorite things to do with Jack are:
1. Talk to him in her "baby" voice. Although most people have a baby voice that sounds high-pitched and sing-songy, Maggie's baby voice is very deep and husky. We always try to get her to talk to him using this voice. To imagine this, please say the following words in your deepest, most chesty voice: "Hi baby Jack!" Now imagine a 2-year-old saying it like that. It's pretty funny. I need to get it on video soon.
2. She also loves to hold him. This is getting tricky as he only weighs 9 pounds less than her and is about 6 inches shorter than her. They're almost the same size even though he's 4 months old and she's 27 months old. Here is a photo so you can see for yourself:
Erin and I love to think about how they'll interact when they're older. We're pretty sure she will boss him mightily, which is funny b/c it'll be the reverse of mine and Erin's childhood relationship. I can just picture her playing pretend with him and while she gets to be a princess, she'll force him to be her servant and follow her around. It's fun to look forward to.

California...and beyond!
We had a great time in California and were bummed to find our vacation over. Here are some highlights:
Our first night there Uncle Steve and Uncle James cooked a feast! Here we are, including their friend Rick.
We hiked at Runyon Canyon with Steve, James, and their friend Rick. While we were there we had beautiful views of the whole city, the Hollywood sign, and Ryan Reynolds.
The next day we boarded the ship! Of course we had to have a practice safety drill with the life jackets. We got an extra-tiny one for Maggie.
Maggie was looking for the perfect pair of sunglasses at Urban Outfitters in San Diego. I'd say she found them!
There was a rock-climbing wall on our ship so of course I had to check it out! You can see Catalina Island behind us. Sweet helmet, huh?
That same night was our formal night at dinner. Maggie got a little demanding. When this picture was taken she was saying, "Bring me my steak!"
Here we are in Mexico. Maggie is continuing her quest for sunglasses here, trying on Blake's.

When we got back to LA we stayed about 4 extra days and got to go to a fantastic playground in Griffith Park called Shane's Inspiration. It was made by a family who lost their son at a young age. Had he lived he would have been in a wheelchair and they wanted to make a playground in his honor that would be accessible to children of all abilities. It was H-U-G-E! Maggie loved it.
Of course our trip wouldn't be complete without a visit to Disneyland. This was on "It's a Small World," Maggie's favorite and first ride! I guess it runs in the family. When I was little I was too scared to ride on Erin's favorite ride, "The Haunted Mansion", so I made my dad ride "It's a Small World" like, 40 times with me. Did you know at Christmas time they decorate the whole ride for Christmas and some of the animatronic kids sing "Jingle Bells"? It's really cool.
All of us at the end of the day below. We were wiped out; what a long, but fun day!

And finally, the piece de resistance!
We visited Mickey's house and got a chance to spend a few minutes with him in his studio. Maggie didn't want him to hold her and was a little timid but she told him he had a nice house, she loves to watch his show (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse) and, finally, "It's so nice to meet you!" But if you ask her if she met Mickey she'll say, "I couldn't like him" (which means she didn't like him). She'll also say, "He was different. He was so nice." It's a little bit of a mystery.
There were so many great moments it's hard to remember them all, but we had a great time with Grant's family and made some amazing memories. Oooh, vacation is so much fun!

8 things about Maggie
My sister, Erin, has been bugging me for days to do this, so here you go:
1. She weighs about 26 pounds which is about how much weight I gained while I was pregnant with her. It's crazy to feel how heavy she is and think that I walked around for a while with that much weight on my body!
2. If you look at her hair in the sun you can see that some strands are red and some strands are blonde. She looks like she's had highlights done. As my friend, Mike Dupree, says to his daughter Emme, "People would pay a lot of money to have hair like yours."
3. She cries in the bathtub when we rinse her hair. You'd think we were rinsing her hair with acid for the way she screams.
4. Instead of saying the word "surprise" she says, "Curprise", as in, "Curprise me, Mama!"
5. Her favorite phrase to say is "Hobby Lobby." Say it yourself, aloud. It's pretty fun. I understand why she likes to say it so much!
6. She has traveled more in her two years than many adults (although not as much as her 2nd cousin, Liam, who has been EVERYWHERE!)
7. She calls "sausage" by its French name, "saucisson", which is much more fun to say.
(You pronounce it "saw-see-sahn") This may sound pretentious but it's just b/c it's such a fun word to say!

Santa Jack and our silly Maggie
This picture just makes me laugh:
Jack's Aunt Amy sent a Santa costume for him and I just think it's so funny! He's getting to be so much fun - laughing, smiling, grabbing things and he's really been working on building up his meaty thighs :)
Here's one of Maggie opening a present from Mimi and Poppy on Christmas Day. I'm not sure why I didn't do a better job with her hair; she looks kinda like a ragamuffin.
Maggie was saying her ABC's today and I noticed she says them in a funny way. I'll write it phonetically for your enjoyment:
ABCDEFGHIJK Ella Mena PQRS Bananas TUV Dubba U XY M Z (She says the Ella, Mena, and Dubba as if they're actually a letter of the alphabet.)
I don't quite know why she stuck the bananas in there except she happened to be looking at some bananas and every time after that kept the bananas in there.
When we put her in bed at night we say "Good night, sleep tight" and a few weeks ago I started adding "Don't let the bed bugs bite, and if they do pick up your shoe and hit them 'til they're black and blue" She now adds that part herself with one Maggie-esque improvement. She says, "Hit them 'til they're black and blue and pink!"
For the third (or fourth?) and hopefully final time we are potty training! The magic ingredient this time has been M&Ms. We give her one M&M each time she goes on the potty and she's averaging about 3-4 times a day! Yesterday she even ASKED to go to the potty at the YMCA and actually went once she got there. I think this really will be the time it works! (If you have any tips for motivating her to go #2 on the potty please let me know!)
And finally, here is another bedtime story. Maggie has gotten VERY particular about how she likes to be put to bed. She has a hand knit blanket from her uncles Steve and James that she HAS to have directly on her back, then her down comforter on top of that and then she wants to be patted firmly. If you get the blankets in the wrong order then she lets you know and if you're not patting her firmly enough she says "Pat me HARDER!" She honestly likes to be patted as hard as if you're burping a baby.
When I was putting her down for her nap today she kept telling me all these things she needed, like "put the yellow blanket down on top of the huge blanket" and "put my lovey HERE" and she kept wriggling around and messing up her blankets while I was trying to arrange them to her specifications. Finally I was frustrated and said, "Maggie! Please stop wriggling around or I'll just let you fix your own blankets." She said, "Okaaaaaay, Mooooooooommmmmmmm" just like a teenager! I have seen the future and I am scared!
All right, I'm going to publish this post and go watch a netflix movie with Grant. Sorry if this is all over the place!
We're leaving to go to California in about a week so I'll try to put up more Christmas photos before then.
Meanwhile, if you have a minute, look at this cupcake lovey I just found. It is adorable! I guess I'm a sucker for anything with a cupcake on it.

Merry Christmas!
This video was from Christmas Eve.
As I type this it's 8:53 on Christmas Night, Maggie is asleep and we are exhausted! We went to a Christmas Eve service at our church last night which started at 10pm and ended around midnight. We didn't go to sleep until around 1am and Maggie woke us up at 5:45 in the morning saying, "I'm ready to be awake now!" As soon as we got her out of her pack and play (we spent the night at my mom's house) she said, "Santa's cookies!" We had left cookies and milk for Santa and while I remembered to remove the cookies and milk I DIDN'T remember to bring the empty plate and cup back in its place. Grant quickly said, "Let's see if Santa took his dishes to the kitchen!" and ran in the kitchen and brought back an empty glass and a plate with some cookie crumbs. What a rookie mistake on my part! We also put out reindeer food in the yard (consisting of oats, bird seed and glitter). I think some of it was eaten by animals during the night but there was still some left so Benton ran out there and raked it around and made "reindeer tracks" in the mulch. Maggie was so excited to go out there and look at it.
We opened presents all day (Santa visited mom's house, dad's house, and our house!) and ate until we were sick.
While Maggie got a lot of really cute things including some adorable clothes and toys, I'd have to say her favorite gift is this toy.

Maggie and Santa
Here is Maggie's photo with Santa! She didn't smile but she looks very cute anyway (totally unbiased opinion here). This is the fancy, Green Hills Mall Santa and the darn photo cost $15! But look at his beard - it looks all weird and scraggly! Maggie didn't seem to mind but Grant said "We paid $15 for this?" I kinda thought the same thing but since it was my idea... At least it's a step up from our intoxicated-looking cheapo Santa with a fake beard from last year.

Crazy 8
If you have a child younger than age 14 and like the clothes at Janie & Jack and Gymboree then you may be interested to know about the clothing store Crazy 8. I just found out about it and it's owned by the parent company of J&J and Gymboree and it's their lower-priced clothing brand. I guess it's sort of like the Old Navy of the family:) Anyway, they had some cute clothes and surprisingly reasonable prices and I just wanted to pass the info along in case you hadn't heard of them either!
They don't have a store in Nashville so if you live here I guess you'll just have to shop online!

Some Christmas photos...and it's still December!
Boy, I must really be on top of my game now. Actually, I just have these photos to post b/c Benton just e-mailed them to me! Here is Maggie with her Poppy and Mimi's Christmas tree. 
Here she is trying to play a bugle instrument that hangs on their tree. She came up with a pretty jazzy rendition of "Joy to the World".
Grant hung some Christmas lights on our front porch and when we took Maggie out there to see them for the first time she audibly gasped and said, "It's MAGICAL!" That's a reaction that'll make you feel good about your light-hanging skills.
I also have to report that her hitting, pushing and biting has really decreased lately so please feel free to send your small children over to play without fear of bodily harm. I made a chart and rewarded her for all of her positive behavior and it has made a world of difference. She still has a few times where she pushes or hits but they're much fewer now.
Speaking of hitting...she has a friend at the YMCA nursery named Jack (maybe she just likes him b/c he has the same name as her cousin). Jack is about 1 1/2 and apparently has a really hard time at the Y if Maggie isn't there. The other day we walked in and his mom said, "Thank goodness you're here. He wouldn't stop crying but he'll be fine now that Maggie is here." I was really happy and thought how great it was that Maggie is so sweet to him. I went to get her name tag and sign-in sheet and when I walked back the mom had left and Maggie was hitting Jack repeatedly on the back of his head! Of course I stopped her immediately but now I wonder if Jack just likes being bossed around and treated roughly. It is also possible that Maggie is usually sweet to him and was treating him bad that day for some reason. But despite this story she really is doing better with hitting!

2. I need a nonfat latte.
3. I need to check my e-mail.
4. Can I have some pita and hummus? (Okay, maybe a child of the 80's in the Middle East would have said this.)
I told my mom this and she thought maybe I was drinking too many lattes. I said, "Maybe, but don't forget that when I was Maggie's age I called every beverage 'Coke' because you drank so much Coke!"
Here's another funny:
Yesterday Maggie was asking me where her potsticker was. I had no idea what she was talking about because I didn't think she knew what potstickers (i.e. an Asian dumpling) were. Finally I realized she meant a sticker she has that looks like a pot! In case you were wondering why Maggie has a sticker that looks like a pot, it's from a Biblical Christmas story sticker book that her Grandma Howard sent her and it goes on a page with the the stable.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm continuing my trend of posting holiday photos a long time after the holiday. Here are some from our trip to Ft. Worth for Thanksgiving.
We went on a little train which Maggie loved. We passed a real train while we were riding and the trains blew their horns to each other, which was great. I think Grandma had a good time, too.
We had a little break halfway through the train ride so we got off for some photos. I can't remember why Maggie wouldn't look at the camera.
Here's a crazy one of Maggie with her wild hair and some funny earrings Grandma clipped on her ears.

Here's one with Maggie at the zoo. Look for the lion in the background. By the way, if you ask Maggie what she wants for Christmas she says "A LION!" Grant does really want a pet but I'm not sure this is what he had in mind.
While we were there Maggie also saw her first movie. She was enraptured by all the previews and lasted about 45 minutes into the movie before she got antsy. Next time (in a long time!) we'll skip the previews and maybe she'll last longer.
All in all it was a great trip and we had so much fun and were all very spoiled by Grandma and Grandpa!

Vitamins
Last night Grant stayed with Maggie while I went to the gym. When I came home he told me about a conversation they had:
Maggie: Um, Dad, I need to get some vitamins so I can nurse Bitty Baby.
Grant: Okay?
Maggie: So, okay, I need to go to the store now to get some vitamins. I'll be back in thirty minutes. I'm going to take your car!
Grant: Okay, see you later!
Maggie: Oh, I forgot my purse!
Maggie: Um, Dad, I need to get some vitamins so I can nurse Bitty Baby.

A-Camping We Will Go!
We went to Stone Door in the South Cumberland State Park near Monteagle, TN this weekend. Wow. That's a lot of information. It was beautiful and a great weekend to camp. Mike Dupree couldn't make it so just Tiffany and their kids, Edison and Emme, went with us. We hiked, made s'mores, slept in tents and the whole nine yards. It was so much fun! I was nervous about how Maggie would do but she surprised me by doing amazingly well. She loved sleeping in the tent in her Uncle Spencer's sleeping bag, and she seemed to love sleeping in between Grant and I. She went right to sleep and woke up once in the middle of the night with a short cry out and once to tell me she loved me. It was pretty chilly so we had several blankets on top of our sleeping bag. Here's a photo Grant took right before we got up for the day.
Maggie also wore this great snowsuit that belonged to Spencer when he was little (he's 10 now). We called her Marshmallow Girl the whole weekend. Here she is with Emme, sitting around the campfire circle.
This snow suit was so big and bulky she was like the kid from a Christmas Story. She could barely put her arms down by her side and when she fell down she couldn't get up without assistance. But she was toasty warm! Don't ask me why she's making this face!

Random things...
We went camping this weekend with Tiffany, Edison and Emme Dupree and had so much fun! I'll post pictures and stories as soon as Grant gets the photos onto the computer.
Check out this link. I got it from Amanda's blog and it is very addictive. It's a fun way to test your vocabulary and also donate rice to end world hunger. I got a 41 but couldn't get past that score. Some of the words are very strange. Let me know how you score!
Finally, here's a funny Maggie story. The other day she was watching as Grant labeled a new tool with our last name. She asked what he was coloring and he said "Howard. That's our last name, Maggie, like how your name is Maggie Claire Howard." Then he asked her what his name was and she said "It's Daddy Claire Howard!" And he asked her what my name was and she said, "Mama Claire Howard!" Not quite accurate but cute nonetheless.

Want a bizstick?
I remembered another funny word Maggie mispronounces: biscuit. She says it "bizstick". I almost prefer it to the correct pronunciation. Oh! I just remembered another one. Instead of saying "chopstick" she calls them "chopping sticks".
She's also been really into mothering lately. Today in her car seat she held her baby up to her chest and covered herself with her jacket and said, "I'm nursing Bitty Baby!" Guess we've been hanging around with Erin a lot lately. It seems like all she does all day is nurse Jack, and when we're there she covers herself up with a blanket or something. She also wants to rock her babies or her stuffed animals or basically anything she can hold. She'll hold them in her arms and kind of bounce/jiggle them while swaying back and forth and saying "shhhhhh....it's okay". It's really sweet.

Rooooaaaaaaaarrrrrrrr!
Here are the promised Halloween photos.
We had such a fun Halloween. We trick-or-treated at Kajsa's house in the morning, before she went to work, and then we went to the zoo with Aunt Erin, cousin Jack, and our friends Kelly and Georgie. Jack and Maggie were both lions (although Jack barely fit in his costume - it was bought before his birth and he's grown so much!) and Georgie was a cheerleader, as you can see.
Maggie and Georgie held hands throughout the zoo. It was so sweet.

Later that night we went trick-or-treating in our neighborhood and she LOVED it! She didn't really care about the candy, although she ate a few pieces, but she loved getting to knock on people's doors and be friendly with them.
Maggie's been saying a lot of funny things lately. The other day she was playing around with Grant on our bed and she said, "Actually, I can probably do this standing in the floor." And she also says "probably" which cracks us up. "Maggie, do you want to eat pasta for lunch?" "Yeah, probably."
She also likes to dance and say, "I'm shaking my booty!"
I've been trying to think of funny words that she mispronounces and can only come up with two:
gymnacktics
oatmenal
The other day I was humming a song and she said, "Mama, what are you doing?" I explained that I was humming and what humming was. The next day she started humming along with every song we hear and proudly announces, "I'm humming, Mama!"
She also absolutely loves our neighbors and whenever we walk outside she says, "Can I say hi to our neighbors?" If they're outside I say yes, and then she'll yell, "Hi, Neighbors!" or "Hola!" (They're hispanic.) They love her, too, and always yell, "Hi Maggie!"

I'm tired, too.
Maggie just woke up from her nap and after I picked her up she said, "Mama, be weally careful with my boo-boo. It's weally tired."
